Want more information?

Our brochures cover a wide range of topics, from slots to Self-Exclusion. Click one of these links to learn more:

Internet Gaming

Internet Gaming is the general term for accessing casino and lottery games through a website. Some people feel like they’ve got more control when playing online – the truth is, the same rules apply from the casino to the couch.

Slots

When it comes to slots, some people think that they can win by hitting the ”STOP” button at just the right time. The truth is, there is absolutely no way to predict or control when a machine will pay out.

Scroll down to learn more about slots and how they really work.

Bingo

Some people think that if you play games with a certain pattern, your odds of winning will improve. Not true. Like slot machines, lottery games and scratch and win games, the only factor that determines whether you win or lose is chance.

Lottery

Playing the same numbers every week or buying a ticket from a store that sold a winning ticket will not help your chances of landing the jackpot.

When it comes to winning lottery games or scratch and win games the only thing you can count on is chance – not skill, time, or place.

Table Games

When you’re at the tables and down some money, it’s easy to convince yourself that you can win it back if you just keep playing. Regardless of whether the game is Roulette, Craps, Blackjack or even Texas Hold’em Poker, there is a house advantage that affects your odds over time. The longer you play, the greater your chance of losing.

Top Five Gambling Tips

These tips won’t help you win a jackpot, but they will help you walk out on top – by having fun and sticking to your budget.

How Gambling Works

There’s no secret formula or lucky charm that will help you improve your odds of winning. For the most part, skill won’t help you at all – it’s all about chance.

You can also register for Charitable Gaming and Gaming Self-Exclusion with a number of off-site locations:

Is Self-Exclusion right for me?

It depends. If you feel that gambling is causing problems in your life, then you should consider it. Since the program is voluntary, no one can force you to join. Only you can make that decision.

Some people find it useful to combine Self-Exclusion with support tools like gambling treatment programs, financial counselling and relationship counselling.

How long does Self-Exclusion last?

You have the option of choosing one of three terms:

  • Six months
  • Twelve months
  • Indefinite (for as long as you need, until you decide that you’re ready to play again)

Regardless of the term you choose, you will remain self-excluded until you apply for and are approved for reinstatement.

How does OLG support me through Self-Exclusion?

OLG supports an individual’s Self-Exclusion commitment by removing him or her from marketing lists and by providing information about resources available to help with problem gambling. If a self-excluded person is detected while at a gaming site, staff will escort them off the property and may issue a trespass. As part of our support of an individual’s commitment to stop gambling, self-excluded individuals are not permitted to win prizes.

If you self-exclude from gaming sites, you will also be excluded from PlayOLG.

What happens if I go to a slots, casino or resort casino site while I’m self-excluded from gaming sites?

The choice to self-exclude is serious. Gaming sites have implemented facial recognition technology. The technology helps to identify anyone enrolled in gaming Self-Exclusion who attempts to re-enter a gaming site by comparing their facial image with images from site security cameras.

Should you return and be detected, staff will assist you off-site and you may be charged with trespassing. As part of our support of an individual’s commitment to stop gambling, self-excluded individuals are not permitted to win prizes.

Can I register someone else into Self-Exclusion?

No. Joining the OLG Self-Exclusion program is a personal choice. You can’t force anyone to join if they don’t want to.

If you’re worried about someone’s gambling habits, please contact the Ontario Problem Gambling Helpline through online chat, by email, or by telephone at 1-888-230-3505.

You can also read this brochure for more information.

Can I update my photo while enrolled in the Self-Exclusion program?

If you are enrolled in OLG’s Self-Exclusion program for gaming slots and casinos you can schedule an appointment to update your photo at a community support location. Call the nearest slots or casino facility for more information.

Can I leave Self-Exclusion?

You may leave the program once your Self-Exclusion term is finished. To do so, you need to submit a formal request to return to play, and be approved for reinstatement.

Submitting a request for reinstatement varies depending on the type of Self-Exclusion you selected. Take a look below to see how to submit your reinstatement request.

Charitable Gaming and Internet Gaming Self-Exclusion

Internet Gaming Self-Exclusion

How do I register for Internet Gaming Self-Exclusion?

If you have an internet gaming account with PlayOLG, you have the option of self-excluding from PlayOLG only (you’ll still be allowed to visit land-based gaming sites).

By registering, you’re making a commitment to not logging onto OLG’s internet gaming site for the term that you’ve chosen. When you take this step, your contact information will be removed from direct marketing lists and any cash balance in your PlayOLG account will be returned to you.

Click here to login and register for self-exclusion from PlayOLG.

What’s the difference between Gaming and Internet Gaming Self-Exclusion?

Internet Gaming Self-Exclusion applies to all of PlayOLG’s online games, including lottery sales.

If you’re currently self-excluded from gaming sites, you’ll be ineligible to register or play on OLG’s internet gaming website, PlayOLG.ca. However, if you register for Self-Exclusion from Internet Gaming, you will not be automatically self-excluded from gaming sites.

Charitable Bingo and Gaming Self-Exclusion

How do I register for Charitable Bingo and Gaming Self-Exclusion?

You can register by speaking to a Charitable Bingo and Gaming Centre manager or calling the OLG Support Centre at 1-800-387-0098.

By registering, you’re making a commitment to not visit any Charitable Bingo and Gaming Centre in Ontario (you’ll still be allowed to visit slots and casino sites and OLG’s Internet Gaming website, PlayOLG.ca). When you take this step, your contact information will be removed from direct marketing lists. In addition, as part of OLG’s support of an individual’s commitment to stop gambling, self-excluded individuals are not permitted to win prizes.

What is an Immediate Ban?

You also have the option of registering for an Immediate Ban at a Charitable Bingo and Gaming Centre before registering for Self-Exclusion. The Immediate Ban is an agreement between you and a single Charitable Bingo and Gaming Centre which is in effect for 40 days. By signing an Immediate Ban you agree to remain off the premises of the Charitable Bingo and Gaming Centre.

How does OLG’s Facial Recognition system work?

During registration for Self-Exclusion, the self-excluder’s facial image is captured and assigned a unique identifier. The image is uploaded to OLG’s database and various biometric identifiers such as distance between the eyes, depth of eye sockets and length of jaw bone are assigned to the self-excluder to be used in future comparison.

Cameras at gaming sites will continually scan customers entering the gaming floor and pictures of their faces will be taken. The images of the faces will be compared with the stored images of self-excluders in OLG’s database. The system looks for matches using algorithms. If a match is made, the database generates a comparison using stored personal information of the self-excluder, including a facial image.

If a possible match is flagged, a designated gaming site staff member manually compares the image of the self-excluder with that of the customer in question.

The final decision of whether to approach a person and ask to confirm his/her identity is left to a designated staff member. To develop the system, OLG worked with the Office of the Information and Privacy Commissioner of Ontario, members of the University of Toronto’s Electrical and Computer Engineering Department, and video surveillance experts at iView Systems.

What about privacy?

All OLG customers should expect to be analyzed by the system when they enter the gaming floor. However, if a customer’s face is not identified as a match by this system, the image is not stored by OLG.

In the event that a match is determined, the captured image is securely stored for one year, consistent with OLG’s data retention policy. The Office of the Information and Privacy Commissioner of Ontario supports this program.

What are biometrics?

Biometrics are unique physical characteristics, such as facial features, fingerprints or iris scans that can be used to verify a person’s identity. OLG is using unique characteristics of the human face. Examples are distance between the eyes, width of eyes, depth of eye sockets, and length of jaw bone.

Why does OLG detect self-excluders?

Self-Exclusion is designed and evaluated in partnership with expert external organizations.
It is often the first step an individual pursues after admitting they have a gambling problem. Self-excluders are connected with available local treatment providers.

Self-exclusion is not a policing program. It is a self-help program, through which OLG supports those individuals who have made a commitment to themselves. Facial recognition technology seeks to help OLG support self-excluders by creating a deterrent for those who may attempt to return to the site.
