Places that can help

Want more information?

Our brochures cover a wide range of topics, from slots to Self-Exclusion. Click one of these links to learn more:

Internet Gaming

Internet Gaming is the general term for accessing casino and lottery games through a website. Some people feel like they’ve got more control when playing online – the truth is, the same rules apply from the casino to the couch.

Slots

When it comes to slots, some people think that they can win by hitting the ”STOP” button at just the right time. The truth is, there is absolutely no way to predict or control when a machine will pay out.

Scroll down to learn more about slots and how they really work.

Bingo

Some people think that if you play games with a certain pattern, your odds of winning will improve. Not true. Like slot machines, lottery games and scratch and win games, the only factor that determines whether you win or lose is chance.

Lottery

Playing the same numbers every week or buying a ticket from a store that sold a winning ticket will not help your chances of landing the jackpot.

When it comes to winning lottery games or scratch and win games the only thing you can count on is chance – not skill, time, or place.

Table Games

When you’re at the tables and down some money, it’s easy to convince yourself that you can win it back if you just keep playing. Regardless of whether the game is Roulette, Craps, Blackjack or even Texas Hold’em Poker, there is a house advantage that affects your odds over time. The longer you play, the greater your chance of losing.

Top Five Gambling Tips

These tips won’t help you win a jackpot, but they will help you walk out on top – by having fun and sticking to your budget.

Core Gambling Concepts

To understand how gambling really works, it’s important to understand these four concepts:

What is Randomness?

Something that is random happens by chance, with no plan or purpose. Most casino games are designed to be completely random, which means there is absolutely nothing you can do to improve your chances of winning. It all comes down to chance.

You can rub that rabbit’s foot in your pocket all you want. It won’t work.

Randomness in the Lottery:

Winners are chosen randomly, and the only thing that affects the odds is the total number of combinations set by the game- not luck or number of people playing.

It’s impossible to predict which lottery numbers will be winners. Every time numbers are chosen, it’s an entirely new set of odds that can’t be predicted or anticipated. We don’t send winning tickets to specific locations, and there is no secret formula picking winning numbers. Simply put, winning the lottery takes no skill- only luck.

Read more about how lottery works

Random numbers

Lotto games are completely random.

 Chances

Chances of winning are always the same.

 Random draw

It’s impossible to predict winning numbers.

Randomness In Slot Machines:

The heart of the slot machine is the RNG (Random Number Generator) chip. It cycles through thousands of combos, even when no one is playing. The second you push the play button, the RNG freezes and generates a number.

RNG_PlaySmart_TitleCard_EngIt doesn’t matter if you push it now or next week or next month: the outcome will always be completely different. There are no patterns, no cycles, and no way to predict a slot machine. Even the images are just for show; it’s the RNG chip that controls the game.

no-skill

Playing a slot machine requires no skill.

 chances

Chances of winning are always the same, no matter how little or large you bet.

 winning

Chances of winning don’t increase with how long you play.

Independence of Events

This means that what happened in the past has no effect on what will happen in the future.

For example, a slot machine could win five times in a row and then lose for the next 100 spins. It’s totally possible because each spin is its own independent event, and every outcome is totally random.

Some people believe that if a slot machine has just paid out, it will not pay out again for a long time. The truth is, there is absolutely no way to predict when it will pay out. Each play is its own independent event.

House Advantage

Yes, there is such a thing as a “house advantage”. Does it mean that the games are rigged? No. It means that the longer you play, the more money you are likely to lose.

Though the house advantage works differently for each casino game as well as for different slot machines, the one thing you can count on across the board is this: a percentage of your bet will always go towards the casino. It’s like betting a dollar and only winning 95 cents. For some games, the house advantage could be as low as one per cent – or as high as 20 per cent.

House advantage doesn’t mean that you won’t win a big jackpot, or walk out with more money than you bet. It means that every time you bet, the odds are stacked against you. You can always win with the odds stacked against you, but the chances of a loss are greater.

Role of Skill

Yes, there are some games where skill might play a role (poker and blackjack, for example). But for most games, it isn’t a factor at all.

Here are some games that are based purely on chance:

  • Lottery Tickets
  • Scratch and win games
  • Slots
  • Roulette
  • Mini-Baccarat
  • Craps
  • Keno

Your odds of winning

What determines whether a slot machine will win or lose?

Random number generators do. There’s one inside every slot machine, and they generate thousands of numbers a second. Each one of those numbers has an equal chance of being a winner or loser. Since slot machines are regulated by the Alcohol and Gaming Commission of Ontario (AGCO) in order to ensure they are completely random, there’s no way to tell when a winning combination will be selected.

Random number generators on slots are the reason why some people win on their first try, while others can spend hours playing and not win anything.

Le jeu chez les jeunes

What are my odds of winning?

For some machines, the odds of winning the top prize are as good as 1 in 4,096 spins. For others, the odds could be as high as 1 in 16 million spins. It all depends on the machine you’re playing.

Les habiletés font-elles une différence?

Can skill help me win?

Unlike some other games, skill has no effect on slots. Many people think that slots are similar to video games and that the more you practice the better you get, which improves their odds – not true. Slot machines use random number generators to determine when they pay out, regardless of how long you play or how recently the machine paid out.

Payouts for slots

How can I trust that OLG slots are truly random?

Ontario takes the regulation of slot machines very seriously. That’s why it has an entire regulating body, The Alcohol and Gaming Commission of Ontario (AGCO), dedicated in part to regulating the operation of slot machines and the sites where they are played. As a provincial agency, the AGCO is completely independent of OLG and reports directly to Ontario’s Ministry of the Attorney General.

When it comes to slots, it is the AGCO, not OLG that does the following:

  • Approving and monitoring slot machine facilities for compliance with all regulatory requirements.
  • Testing, approving and monitoring slot machines.
  • Approving rules of play or changes to rules of play for OLG Slots.
  • Registering slot machine suppliers and slot attendants.
Who decides when a slot machine will pay out?

If OLG slots are random, why does it seem like they take more money than they give back?

For slots, the “payout rate” refers to the percentage of money taken in by a machine that must be paid back over its lifetime. In Ontario, that percentage has to be set at 85 per cent or higher.

That may seem like a lot, but it doesn’t mean you’re going to get $8.50 for every $10 bill you put into a machine. The payout could happen over the course of millions of spins, so it’s impossible to know if, when, or even how much you’ll win.

Can a casino employee change the payout rate?

What’s stopping OLG or a slots employee from changing the payout rate?

The full force of the law. Only the AGCO can approve changes to the payout percentage, and they won’t approve anything lower than 85% (in fact, many Ontario slot machines are set well above 90%)

To change the payout rate of a machine, OLG has to submit a formal request to the AGCO. Once it’s approved, the AGCO needs to physically inspect and approve the change before people can play it again. It’s a pretty serious process!

Are all slot machines created equal?

No, all slot machines aren’t created equal, so we’ve come up with a labelling system that can help you tell the differences between them. Only OLG Slots at Grand River Raceway has these labels, so make sure to keep an eye out for them the next time you visit.

The labels help explain the play experience you may expect from each slot game. They are broken down into the following three areas:

Play Style

The play style information on the label explains how much and how often a slot machine is built to pay out. There are three types of play styles.

slot-label-play-style

High Stakes Play (Purple Label):
Less frequent, large payouts

Balanced Play (Blue Label):
Frequent small to medium payouts

Longer Play (Green Label):
Frequent small payouts

Bonus Frequency

The bonus frequency information on the label explains the frequency of additional rounds within a slot game that offer potential additional wins. There are four types of bonus frequency.

High Bonus Frequency:
Higher chance of hitting a bonus round

Medium Bonus Frequency:
Medium chance of hitting a bonus round

Low Bonus Frequency:
Lower chance of hitting a bonus round

No Bonus Rounds

Hold Percentage

The hold percentage information on the label refers to the percentage of all bets made on a certain slot machine (across all players) that goes to the casino and is not returned as prizing. The hold percentage doesn’t change per play cycle, it’s a pre-determined amount.

High: 8 – 11.5%
Low: 4.5 – 8%
Very Low: 1 – 4.5%

Role of Skill

Yes, there are some games where skill might play a role (poker and blackjack, for example). But for most games, it isn’t a factor at all.

Here are some games that are based purely on chance:

  • Lottery Tickets
  • Scratch and win games
  • Slots
  • Roulette
  • Mini-Baccarat
  • Craps
  • Keno

Slot Machine Label Q & A

Why is PlaySmart labelling slot machines? PlaySmart wanted to make it easier to choose slot machines based on your playing preferences, so you can get the most enjoyment from your play. Is PlaySmart labelling games other than slot machines (i.e. tables, electronic tables, TapTix, Play On Demand)? Only slot machines at OLG Slots at Grand River Raceway are being labelled at this time. Are labels available at every OLG Slots & Casinos location across Ontario? Currently, PlaySmart is only testing this labelling system at OLG Slots at Grand River Raceway. Who calculates the values shown on the labels? All calculations are provided by the individual slot machine vendors. Is there a maximum hold percentage for slot machines? Yes. In Ontario 15% is the maximum amount a slot machine can hold. Are machines with multiple games also being labelled? Yes. Slot machines with multiple games are being labelled. The labels represent an overall average of all the games on the machine. How do I know if the information on the multi-game machine label applies to the game I’m playing? Since the information is providing an overall average, we can’t get specific about each game. The overall average will let you know what you may expect from your play experience. Are you adding the labels because something on the slot machine has changed? Absolutely not. The slot machines are the exact same as they were before we added the labels.

What are the odds of winning?

What are the odds of winning?

The great thing about games like LOTTO 6/49 is that you have a relatively good chance of winning some kind of prize.

Your odds of taking home a free ticket, or a few dollars, are about 1 in 6.6. On the other hand, your chance of winning the grand prize is about 1 in 14 million. So though you could win something, you shouldn’t blow your budget in the hope of scoring a huge jackpot.

The same goes for scratch and win games. For smaller prizes, your odds of winning could be as favourable as 1 in 5. For bigger prizes, they could be somewhere in the range of 1 in 1 million.

Does picking a winner take skill?

Your birthday, anniversary, or lucky number won’t improve your chances of winning the lottery – the outcome is unpredictable. There is no system or level of skill that can beat the odds. Winners are chosen randomly, and the only thing that affects the odds is the total number of combinations set by the game – not luck or number of people playing.

Can you improve the odds?

Can you improve the odds?

No. Like slot machines, it’s impossible to predict which lottery numbers or scratch tickets will be winners. We don’t send winning tickets to specific locations, and there is no secret formula for picking winning numbers.

OLG is audited on a regular basis by Ernst and Young, and has its own rigorous processes in place to ensure that draws are completely fair and random. We go to great lengths to ensure that the odds of winning cannot be changed by OLG employees or lottery retailers in any way.

Does skill make a difference?

Does skill make a difference?

For games like Texas Hold’em Poker and Blackjack, your level of skill can influence the outcome of a game. The reason is because in these types of games, your decisions as a player directly influence the result (this is not the case with slot machines).

Still, no matter how good you are, you can’t eliminate the house advantage – which is why even the best players can lose over time.

How do i win?

How do I win?

Want to come out on top? Set a limit before you place your first bet and stick to it. If you’re down, don’t raise the stakes and try to recover your losses. You could end up losing a lot more.

The best way to have fun is to budget your time and money for gambling, and quit while you’re ahead.

Games to Play

Learn more about some of the fun games we have below!

Paper Bingo

What is it?
Paper bingo is played on paper bingo cards and offers a variety of games with different patterns and jackpots. You can play a one line game or multi-patterned game. At Charitable Bingo & Gaming centres, you play live against other Bingo players. A live caller announces the pattern being played for and each number as it is drawn. The number is then displayed on the flashboard. Bingo sessions are played at set times and last about 2-3 hours. Beginner packages are available so you can ease into the game.

Game Style

  • Longer play
  • Set session times

Electronic Bingo

What is it?
eBingo is the electronic version of paper bingo. With electronic bingo, the machine automatically dabs the numbers called, making it great for beginners. On the other hand, players looking for more fast-paced action can play both versions together. Paper bingo and eBingo play at the same scheduled time, for the same ball call and patterns, and tend to last 2-3 hours. Beginner packages are available so you can ease into the game.

Game Style

  • Longer play
  • Good for beginners
  • Set session times

Turbo Challenge

What is it?
Turbo Challenge is a fast-paced, shutter board style electronic bingo game played at designated times during regular bingo sessions, on an electronic screen. As in any live bingo game, the caller announces the numbers, but here it’s at turbo speed for added fun!

Game Style

  • Quick play
  • Fast-paced
  • Set session times

Break Open Tickets

What is it?
Break Open or Sealed Tickets are a paper style game. They have one or more perforated covers that players tear open to reveal different numbers and symbols. There are two main types:
1) Instant Win – playable at any time and offers the chance to win prizes instantly.
2) Event style – played alongside with session games and offers the chance to win additional prizes during bingo sessions for extra fun.

Game Style

  • Quick play
  • Easy play

TapTix

What is it?
TapTix is a fun, easy to play electronic device that has a variety of game options with the chance to win instant cash prizes and progressive jackpots. TapTix is not like a slot machine, even though they look similar. While slot machines have a random number generator determining the outcome, TapTix machines have prizes randomly distributed across thousands of preprinted tickets and machines. So there is no way of knowing which machines hold which prizes. But just like a slot machine, the longer you play won’t determine if you’re due for a win.

Game Style

  • Quick play
  • Easy play
  • Play anytime

Play on Demand Games (POD)

What is it?
Play on Demand games, also known as POD games, are electronic instant win games you play independently, in between Bingo sessions, at intermission, or even during live Bingo games. Unlike traditional Bingo which is played live against other players, POD games are played against the computer. The outcomes are random and the odds of winning never change. These are great games for experienced players looking for added excitement.

Gambling IQ

null

Can lucky callers or lucky charms give me better chances of winning?

Unfortunately nothing you do can influence the outcome of the game. Gusts of wind move the bingo balls around inside the ball blower until a ball is blown out. This makes the chosen ball completely random.

null

Do certain bingo cards or patterns have better odds of winning than others?

Bingo cards do not feature a number more than once. Which means every single card has the exact same chances of winning. It’s not about choosing the “right card”, it’s about having fun!

null

Does being more experienced at Bingo give me a better chance of winning?

While bingo requires players to actively participate, that doesn’t mean there’s any skill involved in the games. But the more engaged you are when playing, the more fun you’ll have!

null

Does playing multiple cards give you a big edge?

Unlike lottery games that have fixed odds, the odds for Bingo change depending on how many cards are in play and the number of balls drawn. Although technically having more cards will increase your chance of winning, don’t forget it also increases the cost of playing. For instance, if there are 100 cards in play and you play 5 cards instead of 1, your odds of losing go from 99-in-100 to 95-in-100. So you’d be spending 5x more money for much less than 5x your chances of winning.

null

On TapTix machines is it worth it to “wait it out” for a win?

There’s no way to know or predict when a TapTix machine will pay out. That’s because prizes are randomly distributed in these machines. So it’s never worth it to “wait it out”, because if you do, you’re likely to lose even more money.

Planning Your Visit

  1. Plan your spending
Set a budget so you do not overspend. Charitable Bingo & Gaming centres locations are cash only. Most centres have ATMs on site.

  2. Check game schedules
Bingo sessions are played at set times and vary by centre. Be sure to check the schedule for session start times in advance so you don’t miss out on the fun!

  3. Arrive early
    1. Arrive about 30 minutes before the bingo session starts so you have time to buy your bingo cards and find a seat. If you plan on playing only independent electronic games such as TapTix and POD, then you can come and go as you like.
    2. Locate the point of sale counter to buy your games.

  4. Bring your gear
You will need a dauber to play paper Bingo. However, if you don’t already own one, you can buy one at the centre. You can also purchase food and beverages at the centre. Just remember to bring cash!

Visit the Centre closest to you

Advice for players

Start with fewer Bingo cards if you’re a beginner. If it seems like the caller is whizzing through the numbers, you may be playing too many cards. Rule of thumb is to never play more than you can watch.
Speak to customer service representatives, who are available to help and educate players.
Yell “BINGO” as soon as you get a bingo in order to win! Once the caller has moved on to the next number, you will have missed your chance to win.
Pick up a program before playing to help you follow the patterns in play.
Plan a budget: It’s a good idea to know how much you want to spend ahead of time so you don’t overspend.
Play what you can afford: Only use money from your entertainment budget to play Bingo.
Take occasional breaks when playing TapTix to clear your head and stay aware of your play.

If you’re worried about your own gambling habits, or someone else’s, here are some warning signs to look out for.
