When the Great Depression hit in the 1930s, it suddenly became harder for most families to put meat on the dinner table. A Sunday chicken dinner was a popular family favourite, but the average household depended on the leftovers to last for a good 3 meals. At the time, every casino on the Vegas strip offered a roast chicken dinner with veggies and potatoes, all for less than $2.00! (roughly $25, by today’s standards.) So, as you can imagine, being able to turn your chump change into a delectable meal was quite tempting. Given that $2.00 was also the standard casino table bet at the time, Table games dealers would attract players by calling out, “Winner, winner, chicken dinner!”
Prices have certainly changed since the 1930s, but one thing remains the same: it’s always a good idea to take the occasional break from gambling and grab a bite.
