CRAPS STRATEGIES

Craps is a game of chance. There is no skill required to play and therefore, no strategies that will help you win. Each outcome is completely independent of the last. However, there are ways you can make the most of your time at the craps table and have fun while you play.

Know the true odds

Some bets, like Pass Line bets, Come bets, Place bets and Odds bets, have better true odds than others. Understanding which ones are more favourable than others can help you extend your play.

Higher true odds vs. higher payout odds

Bets with higher true odds, like the Pass Line, Come, Place and Odds bets, have lower payouts. It may be tempting to forego these bets in favour of those with higher payouts, but keep in mind, the higher the payout, the lower the true odds.

That means, you are more likely to lose than you are to win. Of course, no matter the true odds or the payout, there is no way to predict the outcome of a roll and no guarantees.

Should I bet on streaks?

Sometimes, you’ll see a streak where certain numbers keep coming up. There are always streaks in random games, but the problem is simple – you never know if that streak will continue.

If you have a one in five chance of a number appearing in a roll, and it appears several times in a row, the probability of it appearing again stays one in five – it never changes, regardless of what happened beforehand. Every roll is an independent event, and streaks are nothing more than back-to-back random occurrences.

TIP

Remember, a roll of the dice is completely random and no matter how “hot” a table might be, a shooter’s streak always comes to an end.

Will a betting system give me an edge?

No betting system can beat a casino with a house advantage. They may appear advantageous in the short term, but in the long term, the casino ensures it will win through the house edge.

Dice have no memory which makes every roll independent of the last. Using betting systems can lead you into situations where the stakes are high and there is no guarantee of a positive outcome.

TIP

Betting systems don’t work in craps. Anyone can win at any time, but the odds over the long-term favour the casino. Playing based on a “system” can lead you to lose far more than you budgeted.

Keep your winnings and bankroll separate

Keep your initial play amount and your winnings separate; try using different pockets. Only play from your original bankroll and stop once it’s gone. That way, you’ll go home without losing any of your winnings.

No shooter is luckier than another

Shooting dice is not a skill, it’s a matter of luck and mathematics. Similarly, no shooter is luckier than another, whether it’s their first time or 101st time.

Don’t chase your losses

Craps is an exciting, fast-paced game that’s meant to be fun. To keep it fun, accept that sometimes you may lose. When that happens, don’t chase your losses. Trying to win back lost money is a sure way to go over your budget.
